elijah and prayer

An example of praying according to God's will:
1 Kings 18:36-38
'At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. '

Is this just Old Testament talk, or can God still answer prayer?
James 5:17-18
'Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.'

  1. I read a very interesting story about a poor lady who was down to her last 20 cents. She believed that God told her to go shopping, to gather up all she needed, and check out at cash register #7. She gathered food supplies for 2 months or more, and as she got to the cash register #7 the cashier was closing for lunch. Not to be deterred (nor disobedient), the poor lady was still standing there waiting when the surprised cashier returned from lunch. As she was ringing up the purchases, as announcement came on the loud speaker. As it was the store's 7th anniversary, who ever was checking out at that moment at #7 was going to receive free of charge all of their purchases! What a reward for her faith and preseverance!
